A scientist stationed in the arctic embarks on a desperate mission: make contact with the crew of a spaceship, to warn them about the deteriorated state of the planet. That’s the premise of a new film from George Clooney, The Midnight Sky, which Netflix is set to debut on December 23rd.

The movie is based on the 2016 novel Good Morning, Midnight by Lily Brooks-Dalton, and it looks very much like it’s aiming for the same prestige science fiction drama space flick occupied by another film that Clooney starred in, Gravity. In addition to Clooney, the film stars Rogue One’s Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo (Selma), Kyle Chandler (First Man), Demián Bichir (Alien: Covenant) and Tiffany Boone (Beautiful Creatures).

This time, Clooney isn’t stranded in space, but he is one of the few remaining survivors on Earth, which seems to have experienced a detrimental global catastrophe, something Clooney’s character Augustine says “started with a mistake.”

In the novel, he’s refused to evacuate his station along with the rest of his crew, obsessed with his work and the effort to contact the crew of the Aether, a spacecraft on its way home from a mission deep in space. According to the book, the ship went to Jupiter, but it looks as though they might have traveled to another system in the film.

Led by Augie (Jones), they’re unable to raise Mission Control because of the catastrophe, and are dealing with the problem of a silent Earth. In the trailer, Augustine has to make his way across the arctic (along with a young girl—his daughter? A ghost?) to reach a station with a stronger antenna to try and regain contact. Along the way, it looks like the Aether runs into some additional problems, and Augustine faces some unexpected challenges on his trip across the arctic.

The film is set to start streaming on December 23rd on Netflix, and will also appear in some select theaters.
